What leaders should know about closing the strategy-execution gap

Hult Ashridge faculty,  Alison Reynolds, along with David Lewis asked 80 senior executives from 20 countries where they focus their attention during  strategic execution, the leaders  overwhelmingly pointed to tangible things  such as organizational structures  and processes. But they also told the researchers that their  biggest barriers to great execution were intangible things  such as employee interaction and mindsets. Why do leaders knowingly focus on the wrong things? Because even though leaders know the  Ã¢â‚¬ intangibles†Ã‚  are what really matter to great strategy execution, addressing them is really hard.  It takes genuine engagement and two-way interaction. It means admitting  you don’t have all the answers. It takes giving up a certain amount of control.  But there is more value to be found in exploring an open question than in imposing an answer that cannot be seriously challenged. Smoking on College Campuses - 1260 Words

The days of smoking on college campuses is coming to an end! (Daneman) The Department of Health and Human Services made an announcement, backed by the White house, to act on getting colleges everywhere to enforce a tobacco free campus! (Daneman) Smoking is a choice made amongst an individual and falls within the first amendment in the constitution along with eight more! So how can we legally ban smoking from a whole college campus? In the end, the individual is going to do what he/she pleases if there is no enforcement. Smoking should be banned from college campus, except where there is a designated smoking area away from others on the campus! Smoking is the use of tobacco or nicotine. Tobacco is made up of more than 70 plant species†¦show more content†¦E-Cigarettes are battery operated nicotine inhalers. (Neporent) Instead of a harmful chemical floating into the air, it is said to be just a â€Å"water vapor†. E-cigarettes contain many different fills. Some consist of vanilla flavored nicotine, chocolate flavored nicotine, and even as far as to making them taste like mountain dew without any nicotine. Although research shows that bystanders aren’t exposed to the secondhand smoke, they are still being exposed to the nicotine! (Keilman) The American Lung Association’s found the chemicals formaldehyde and acetone in the e-cigarette vapor that is exhaled. (Keilman) Should the use of e-cigarettes be allowed in a public smoke free zone? If you took a moment to consider the facts about the many harmful chemicals inside of cigarette smoke and what it does, not only to the smoker’s body, but to those around them as well, could you see why smoking is banned from many places such as: restaurants, schools, shopping centers, and most public places? Answer: Introduction Two types of conflicts generally arise in workplaces which are interpersonal conflict and task related conflict. In case of virtual teams, task connected conflicts be apt to come up more often due to a more recurrent emphasis on individual work [1]. However, when interpersonal conflicts arise in virtual teams, it becomes extremely difficult to resolve it. Most of the conflicts in virtual teams result in long-standing negative feelings. Information technology is the best way to resolve such conflicts with in virtual teams. Information technology and related systems can play a major role in managing cultural conflicts in virtual team. Some strategies of managing cultural conflicts within a virtual team are hereby mentioned below [2]. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is capable of making international partnership possible. ICT can enhance intercultural interaction by delivering asynchronous technologies such as discussion forums [3]. It can help non-native team members to have more time to study a particular information and process. As a result, language error will be minimized. By implementing intranet, tools related to groupware and collaborative systems, information will be shared efficiently to all members of a virtual team. On the other hand, synchronous technologies can also be used such as video conferencing, teleconferencing and chat rooms which will facilitate real time communication. Virtual Negotiation System, also known as (VNS) is an online negotiation system based on collaborative negotiation strategies of Raider and Coleman. This system also helps to reduce conflict within virtual teams. On the other hand, temporal coordination technique is a method that can be implemented to arbitrate and direct timing and content of interaction in a virtual group [4]. There are some other ICT tools than can be implemented in order to reduce or eliminate cultural conflicts in a virtual team. Those tools are hereby mentioned in the table below. These tools are extremely helpful; however, they also have some disadvantages and drawbacks. Those are described below. Email mostly helps non-native English speaking people who can write and read English better than speak it. On the other hand, it also helps to deliver record related to communication which in turn helps to reduce misunderstanding [5]. Biggest disadvantage of this system is lack of swift response. In case of conversation forum, any information can be edited so that team members can gain latest news and knowledge which will decrease chances of conflict. Besides, this system is very helpful to manage team members from dissimilar language backgrounds [6]. It allows team members from different backgrounds to spend extra amount of time reading the information and understand what it states. Lack of rapid feedback is a major disadvantage of this system. Groupware ICT tool is tremendously significant as it helps to share information to mass audience. Besides, flexibility of this system can be gained by the help of other systems such as intranet, discussion forum and email [7]. One of major reasons of conflict within a virtual team is virtual communication. Team members cannot see expression of others. Therefore, sometimes as a result of confusion conflicts rise. In case of video conferencing team members can see facial terminology, gestures and other visual cues of. This system is way better than teleconferencing as it helps the members to put a face to the name. However, this system does not have the ability to fine tune and is unable to re-examine the messages. As a result, members from dissimilar language backgrounds face issues. Tele-conferencing was extremely useful before the introduction of video conferencing. It can help people to communicate sentiment easily [8]. It also helps to gain rapid feedback. However, members who are not fluent in a particular language cannot participate actively. Besides, in this system, team members will enter the discussion without seeing other people. Besides, they cannot pick visual cues that increase the chances of misinterpretations. That is why; nowadays, this communication tool is not used in most of the business organizations. Especially for virtual teams, this tool is absolutely outdated as it creates more problems. Nowadays, cultural diversity is seen in most of the business organization. The challenge is to manage this diversity efficiently and properly. Managing conflicts in virtual teams is more challenging and that is why; it is paramount to implement IT tools. ICT is such a tool that offers several systems that can assist. However, it is important to select a proper communication system to enhance the team work in a virtual team. The Battle of Concepcion of the Texas Revolution The Battle of Concepcià ³n was the first major armed conflict of the Texas Revolution. It took place on October 28, 1835, on the grounds of Concepcià ³n Mission outside of San Antonio. Rebel Texans, led by James Fannin and Jim Bowie, fought off a vicious assault by the Mexican Army and drove them back into San Antonio. The victory was a huge one for the morale of the Texans and led to the subsequent capture of the town of San Antonio. War Breaks out in Texas Tensions had been simmering in Mexican Texas for some time, as Anglo settlers (the most famous of whom was Stephen F. Austin) repeatedly demanded more rights and independence from the Mexican government, which was in a chaotic state of disarray barely a decade after gaining independence from Spain. On October 2, 1835, rebellious Texans opened fire on Mexican forces in the town of Gonzales. The Battle of Gonzales, as it came to be known, marked the beginning of Texas armed struggle for Independence. Texans March on San Antonio San Antonio de Bà ©xar was the most important town in all of Texas, a vital strategic point coveted by both sides in the conflict. When war broke out, Stephen F. Austin was named head of the rebel army: he marched on the city in the hopes of putting a quick end to the fighting. The ragged rebel â€Å"army† arrived at San Antonio in late October  1835: they were heavily outnumbered by Mexican forces in and around the city but were well-armed with lethal long rifles and ready for a fight. Prelude to the Battle of Concepcion With the rebels camped outside the city, Jim Bowies connections proved vital. A one-time resident of San Antonio, he knew the city and still had many friends there. He smuggled a message to some of them, and dozens of Mexican residents of San Antonio (many of whom were every bit as passionate about independence as the Anglo Texans) surreptitiously left the town and joined the rebels. On October 27, Fannin and Bowie, disobeying orders from Austin, took some 90 men and dug in on the grounds of the Concepcià ³n Mission outside of town. The Mexicans Attack On the morning of October 28, the rebellious Texans got a nasty surprise: the Mexican army had seen that they had divided their forces and decided to take the offensive. The Texans were pinned against the river and several companies of Mexican infantry were advancing on them. The Mexicans had even brought cannons with them, loaded with lethal grapeshot. The Texans Turn the Tide Inspired by Bowie, who kept cool under fire, the Texans stayed low and waited for the Mexican infantry to advance. When they did, the rebels deliberately picked them off with their lethal long rifles. The riflemen were so skilled that they were even able to shoot the artillerymen manning the cannons: according to survivors, they even shot down a gunner who held a lighted match in his hand, ready to fire the cannon. The Texans drove off three charges: after the final charge, the Mexicans lost their spirit and broke: the Texans gave chase. They even captured the cannons and turned them on the fleeing Mexicans. Aftermath of the Battle of Concepcià ³n The Mexicans fled back into San Antonio, where the Texans dared not chase them. The final tally: some 60 dead Mexican soldiers to only one dead Texan, killed by a Mexican musket ball. It was a heady victory for the Texans and seemed to confirm what they suspected about the Mexican soldiers: they were poorly armed and trained and didnt really want to be fighting for Texas. The rebellious Texans remained camped outside of San Antonio for several weeks. They attacked a foraging party of Mexican soldiers on November 26, believing it to be a relief column loaded with silver: in reality, the soldiers were only collecting grass for the horses in the besieged city. This became known as the Grass Fight. Although the nominal commander of the irregular forces, Edward Burleson, wanted to retreat to the east (thus following the orders that had been sent from General Sam Houston), many of the men wanted to fight. Led by settler Ben Milam, these Texans attacked San Antonio on December 5: by December 9 the Mexican forces in the city had surrendered and San Antonio belonged to the rebels. They would lose it again at the disastrous Battle of the Alamo in March. The Battle of Concepcià ³n represented everything the rebellious Texans were doing right†¦and wrong. They were brave men, fighting under solid leadership, using their best weapons - arms and accuracy - to best effect. But they were also unpaid volunteer troops with no chain of command or discipline, who had disobeyed a direct order (a wise one, as it turned out) to keep clear of San Antonio for the time being. The relatively painless victory gave the Texans a great morale boost, but also increased their sense of invulnerability: many of the same men would later die at the Alamo, believing they could hold off the entire Mexican army indefinitely. For the Mexicans, the Battle of Concepcià ³n showed their weaknesses: their troops were not very skilled in war and broke easily. It also proved to them that the Texans were dead serious about independence, something that had perhaps been unclear before. Not long after, President/General Antonio Là ³pez de Santa Anna would arrive in Texas at the head of a massive army: it was now clear that the most important advantage the Mexicans possessed was that of sheer numbers. Oslo peace process begun as a clandestine negotiation in a house that was secluded and owned by Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1990 in the Oslo outskirts. The negotiation was to initiate peace process and even at the time of conducting the meeting it was done in se crecy since house occupants were informed that it was an academic working (Williams, 2009, p. 77). It was illegal for Israel citizens to come into any meeting with members of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). Publicizing of the peace process resulted to a serious preparation on both sides to come into an agreement with a long time enemy. This was not taken lightly by the Israelites where an assassination was made on Israel Prime Minister Rabin in 1995. The Oslo Accord comprised of a series of understandings and agreements reached upon and accepted in the initial secret bilateral negotiations conducted between PLO and Israel. It had aspects of mutual recognition and declaration of principles. Every detail of historical undertakings and the failure of the process will be the focus of this paper. Initiation of the process After several centuries of bloodshed, conflicts, unending war, discrimination and inhuman activities, leaders led by Israel Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PL O leader Yaasser Arafat begun negotiations that were meant to resolve the conflict. A mutual recognition was granted and declarations of principles were initiated agreeing to establishment of Palestinian self-government in parts of Gaza strip and West bank (Selby, 2003, p. 182). The accord was agreed upon and signed in 1993 where timetables and frameworks of Palestinians transition to self-rule and address border issues, Jerusalem and Israeli settlements and establishment of Palestinian state.
